pMon SUCCESS STORY

In the area of commercial hosting and co-location, the ability to monitor and manage customers’ power usage is an essential factor in providing a viable commercial outcomes and operational certainty.

Background
Telstra identified a need to more accurately measure and manage its co-location and hosting customers’ infrastructure. It approached IDC Solutions, having selected its pMon power monitoring product to achieve this end.
The objective was to identify and individually monitor customer’s equipment, housed within Telstra’s eight data centres across all Australian capital cities. The monitoring had to be installed without disrupting customer’s operations and the information had to be accessible remotely and in real-time.

Solution
IDC progressively rolled out pMon to Telstra sites from Q4 2008 to Q2 2009, ultimately monitoring over 1200 individual racks. The data collected has been incorporated into Telstra‘s commercial teams for inclusion in its billing systems. Additionally all operational metrics have been included into core alarming and global operations teams, dramatically improving visibility of the service and improving the customer experience thru better and proactive case management. Power usage information that previously took several days or weeks to compile can now be generated within seconds remotely. This delivered additional collocation revenue of approx $2m PA through greater power accuracy measurement. Also achieving cost reductions by automating the monitoring process.

Conclusion
The pMon system delivered immediate management and commercial benefits to Telstra. Since its initial inception the pMon’s use within Telstra has been extended and it has now been incorporated into more and more of Telstra’s data centre environments.
